Cabernet Franc from South Africa
Cabernet Franc - the mild Cabernet Sauvignon
The French-born Cabernet Franc is the ancestor of Cabernet Sauvignon. Compared to Cabernet Sauvignon , Cabernet Franc doesn't have quite its richness. A little milder, it is more robust, but also a little less popular. Nevertheless, it is not inferior to any wine, even if there are similarities, this grape variety has an individual taste profile with which it gives a discreet smoothness especially to cuvees.
It is grown in the Loire, northern Italy, Spain and other major international wine producers, including South Africa.
Cabernet Franc in South Africa
Similar to other countries, the grapes are mostly used as compensation in cuvees. Thus, there are only 18 wineries in South Africa that vinify this grape variety purely. Due to the soil conditions and the maritime climate, the wine is bred out to top quality. This has only been done with success since the end of the last century and there has been no let up in performance since. The diversity of the grape variety has become clear, especially in recent years.
