Chenin Blanc from South Africa
Chenin Blanc - Origin of the grape variety
The white wine grape variety Chenin Blanc has its origins in the town of Anjou (province of Touraine) in France. There, Chenin Blanc has been cultivated since the 9th century.
A special feature of Chenin Blanc is its potential to reflect the terroir of the vineyards very well. It is highly probable that the grape variety Chenin Blanc once originated from the crossing of the two grape varieties Sauvignon Blanc and Roter Traminer. The grape variety is characterised by an intense fruit aroma as well as a comparatively very high yield. This allows the winegrowers a great deal of leeway with regard to the quality of the wines.
Although Chenin Blanc is now very popular all over the world, South Africa has become a specialist in this grape variety. Besides the development as a pure wine as well as a cuvée, Chenin Blanc is also excellently suited for sparkling wines and liqueur wines.
Chenin Blanc Wines - smell and taste
Chenin Blancs aged in steel tanks are often fresh and fruity. The aromas include apple, pear, melon and tropical fruits.
Chenin Blancs that are aged or stored in wooden barrels (e.g. barrique) have a creamy character. The aromas here range from honey to nuts.
Chenin Blanc from South Africa
The grape variety Chenin Blanc , like other grape varieties from France, was once brought to South Africa by the Huguenots. Locally, it was also the Huguenots who promoted viticulture and thus shaped South African wine culture.
The winemakers of the wineries in South Africa create the wines with a strong focus on the terroir of the vineyard. The special climate as well as the diversity of the soils has led to South Africa being appreciated as a Chenin Blanc nation worldwide.
