Winery Boland Cellar

The captivating history of the Boland Cellar Winery in Paarl dates back to the late 1930s. In 1939, some 40 Boland-area winegrowers banded together to make wine.

Soon all the production was too much for the existing facilities and the group disbanded. Then nine courageous farmers from the Paarl area decided to continue their cooperation. On 17 June 1941, they founded their own winery. Today this winery is known as Boland Cellar. The winery is located in the picturesque Paarl Valley surrounded by lots of nature. Boland Cellar's minimal intervention approach in the winery contributes to the excellent quality of the wines.

Winemaker: Johan Joubert

Johan Rupert is definitely one of the faces of the South African wine world. It all started at Elsenburg Agricultural College, where Johan gained his tertiary qualification as a winemaker.

This was followed by prominent stints at well-known South African wineries such as Murati, Windmeul, Bovlei, Boland Cellar and Kleine Zalze.
After college, Johan soon proved to be one of South Africa's most promising young winemakers. Johan was the youngest winemaker to win the coveted General Smuts Trophy at the SA Young Wine Show.

After initially working at Boland Cellar as a winemaker, he moved to Kleine Zalze in 2002 where, among other things, he produced many award-winning wines, which earned him another award as best South African producer in 2007.

In 2014, he returned "home" to Boland Cellar to take up the position of cellar master.
