Winery Buitenverwachting

The beautiful farm Buitenverwachting is situated on the east-facing slopes of Constantia Mountain about 12 km from False Bay. Buitenverwachting originally belonged to the Constantia Estate, which was founded by Simon van der Stel, the first governor of the new Dutch colony at the tip of Africa. First sold in 1773, Buitenverwachting has changed hands many times. However, the changes of ownership did not harm the quality of the wines in the slightest.

The estate flourished with its 90 000 vines, which were planted in 1825 by Ryk Arnoldus Cloete, brother of the famous Hendrik Cloete of Constantia. From 1866 onwards, the outstanding quality of the Buitenverwachting farm was due to the Louw and Lategan families. Buitenverwachting covered 100 hectares when Christine and Richard Müller took over the estate in 1980. At that time they planted equal parts of red and white grapes: 350,000 young vines.
