Winery De Grendel
Winery De Grendel
De Grendel means "the latch" in Dutch. This farm was historically the gateway on the route to the inland settlements of Durbanville and Stellenbosch, which had to be opened to cross the Tygerberg, which got its name from the leopard-like patches of vegetation on the steep hill. The Cape Town road passed it because it was easier for bullock carts to cross the Tygerberg than the sandy plains of Bellville at that time.

Winemaker: Charles Hopkins
Charles Hopkins has been with De Grendel since the early days of winemaking on the Durbanville farm in 2005, when Sir David Graaff lured him away from Graham Beck with an irresistible offer to head up winemaking and design and build his own cellar. Charles is a lifelong student of wine and even after 30 years of experience in the industry and several local and international awards, he remains ever curious to learn more on his winemaking journey.
