Winery Rust en Vrede
The winery Rust en Vrede is situated south of Stellenbosch, about 15km from False Bay. The estate nestles on the lower slopes of the Helderberg and lies between 85m and 130m above sea level, with views of Table Mountain to the west. The vineyards are situated on north-facing slopes.
The official date on the title deed of Rust en Vrede is 12 March 1694. The land was granted personally by the Governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel. The Cape Dutch buildings on the property date from 1780 and are all listed. Owner Jean Engelbrecht still lives in the former manor house where he also grew up. The original winery and wine cellar has become the world-renowned restaurant Rust en Vrede, which wins awards every year for its excellent cuisine.
